Back to Basics: Classic Work Styles for Summer
I talk a lot about how to wear the season’s best trends in the workplace, but sometimes I think we overcomplicate. Especially when you’re not sure what to wear (or in times of wardrobe crisis), it’s worth remembering that the best office outfits are often built from the most classic styles.
That’s why, this week, I’m back to the basics. I partnered with Dobbin Clothing to style some simple looks that will never steer you wrong in the office. They look great, they’re easy to throw on when you’re running late, and you probably already have most of these pieces in your closet. (If you don’t, scroll to the bottom—Dobbin is offering us a discount!)

Cropped Pants & a Button-Up
If you don’t have a simple white button-up in your wardrobe yet, get one ASAP! This piece really plays double duty in a woman’s wardrobe: You can wear it everywhere from the beach to the boardroom.
Get a cotton fabric so you can stay cool during the summer, and pair with cropped cotton pants in navy or blue for a classic business casual look. Throw on some simple ballet flats and one bold accessory, and you’re out the door!
A shirtdress in khaki or white is one of my favorite go-to styles. It’s easy to throw on, looks professional without looking too dressy, and when worn with a belt around the waist becomes a little more sleek and modernized. No need for heels with this get-up—this style looks perfect with simple ballet flats or sandals.
A Pencil Skirt & a Short Sleeved Button-Up
Like your white shirt and sheath dress, a pencil skirt will save you in those “what am I going to wear?” moments time and time again. Instead of a long-sleeved button up, go with a short-sleeved one, and cinch it at the waist with a belt to avoid having to tuck your shirt in.
And skip the grey or black wool skirt—choose a cotton blend in a light, neutral color (think tan, cream, or white) to make your outfit seasonally appropriate.
